Most people do not think of a chiropractor for headache care. Our first step is to run to the medicine cabinet for painkillers. However, painkillers are only relieving the pain rather than treating the problem.
If you are suffering from a tension headache, you can be effectively treated by chiropractic adjustments. A tension headache is a tight band or dull ache around the head or behind the eyes. A common cause of a tension headache is subluxations in the upper back and neck. A trained chiropractor can adjust your upper back and neck to relieve the misalignment in your spine that is causing your headaches.
How to Prevent Headaches
The American Association of Chiropractic suggests methods to prevent headaches:
- Many people spend large amounts of time in fixed positions, such as sitting in front of a computer. Take a break every 30 minutes to an hour to stretch. These stretches will realign your spine to a natural position.
- Engage in low-impact exercise if you are suffering from intense headaches, such as walking.
- Avoid teeth clenching. The tension results in stress at the temporomandibular joints (TMJ) – the two joints that connect your jaw to your skull – leading to TMJ irritation and a form of tension headaches.
