Auto Accidents
Auto Accidents
Have You Been in an Auto Accident?
Many people often feel “only a little sore” after a car crash. Because they believe that their symptoms will go away they often delay their first chiropractic visit. But these mild irritations can soon develop into limited mobility, pain and neurological symptoms. It is quite common for signs of whiplash to come on days to weeks after the initial injury.
When it comes to your health and well-being, nothing is too trivial. Receiving an assessment within a day or two of an accident allows our doctors to identify and address injuries as soon as possible. If it has been weeks to months since the accident and your symptoms are still persisting, make sure to receive care as quickly as possible to avoid irreversible damage.
With advanced certification from theSpine Research Institute of San Diego, Dr. Gard leads our team in answering your questions and offering a personalized treatment plan to help you regain or maintain your freedom. Some symptoms that can lead to lasting effects if left untreated are:
Neck pain and stiffness
Headaches
Pain in the shoulder and/or between the shoulder blades
Low-back pain
Pain or numbness in the arm and/or hand
Dizziness
Difficulty concentrating or remembering
Irritability, sleep disturbances, and/or fatigue
Jaw pain/stiffness or teeth that feel like they aren’t fitting together correctly
Even if you’re unsure about your post-accident symptoms, call today to schedule an evaluation.
Getting Ready For Your First Appointment
Before your first visit, it is important that you file a separate Medical claim from your Vehicle claim with your Auto Insurance company. In Oregon, it is important to know that medical claims go through your own Auto Insurance PIP (Personal Injury Protection), regardless of who was at fault for the accident.
We will need:
The name of your Auto Insurance company
Your Medical (PIP) Claim number
Your PIP Adjuster(s) name and phone number.
Oregon is a state that believes in taking care of its citizens. The PIP policy that all Oregon drivers must carry is where the “no fault” aspect comes into play. PIP insurance covers your own injuries up to a certain limit during the first year after the accident occurs. More information can be found under ORS 742.524.
Address Injuries Quickly to Save in the Long Run
While vehicles continue to improve their safety ratings, they have yet to design the perfect car. Injuries from collisions are still very costly to both your productivity and health. The CDC states that each year, “The cost of medical care and productivity losses associated with injuries from motor vehicle crashes exceeds $63 billion.” Receiving care as soon as possible can help keep your body from breaking down. At Walker Road Chiropractic, our team wants to help improve your life by restoring your health saving you time and money.
Every Body is Different
You and your passenger may have very different symptoms even though you were in the same accident. Our doctors gain a detailed understanding of what happened to help identify and treat your unique condition. They also consider your post-accident adaptations as it is not unusual for new symptoms to emerge as time goes on.
Target Mobility Issues and Physical Discomfort
In our office we use the state-of-the-art E-Scan™ Digital Electronic Palpation and DynaROM™ Motion surface EMG on everyone involved in a motor vehicle collision. In addition to range-of-motion observation, the MyoVision system provides us with another tool to accurately locate problem areas of heightened neuromuscular activity and true muscular spasm. Sometimes people will have “normal” range of motion after a collision, but yet they still experience pain. This tool helps locate those hard-to-find areas. We also incorporate the MyoVision Flexvision on the cervical and lumbar spine to quickly and accurately quantify any limitations or asymmetries in the range of motion of your neck and low back. This, along with years of training and experience, will allow our Doctors to accurately diagnose your condition and coordinate proper treatment.
Provide Customized Treatment
At Walker Road Chiropractic, it is our philosophy that each person receives a unique approach to identify and resolve their symptoms. Based on your needs, our doctors may prescribe x-rays, massage, or physiotherapies. Our goals are to help your body hold correct alignment and proper neuromuscular control.
In addition to these personalized treatments, our doctors advise on gentle restorative exercises and stretching to further help with healing. We will also instruct you on proper headrest and body positions for riding in the car to help curtail injury if you’re unfortunately involved in another collision.

The stresses of everyday life, sport, work, or auto injuries can throw your body out of alignment, blocking the body’s natural balance and flow. Spinal misalignments disrupt the flow of the nervous system and interfere with the proper functioning of many aspects of the body such as metabolism, sleep patterns and blood pressure. All disorders have what is professionally referred to as momentum. This means that once a condition develops and progresses it will continue to do so at an increased pace.
A Chiropractor’s Adjustments to the Spine Help the Body Heal Itself
Our treatment is based on overcoming this momentum and then correcting the original cause of the disorder rather than masking the symptoms with medication. Adjustments to the spine help to regulate the entire body by tapping into the body’s natural ability to heal itself. The team at Walker Road Chiropractic will help find, fix, and remove these obstacles so your body can heal and restore its natural balance –and you can more fully participate in life!

What is the Activator Method? And How It Can Help You!
Our team of Chiropractor Doctorsuse the hand-held Activator instrument to provide gentle quick adjustments, which are ideal for those who prefer a more low-force correction over the hands-on thrust of traditional chiropractic adjustments.
Considering each person’s needs, the doctors can use either the small spring-loaded Activator instrument or the cordless electronic adjusting instrument. Both help deliver a focused corrective impulse into the dysfunctional spinal segment.
While the instrument is delivering a low-force, high-speed adjustment, the patient will feel only a very gentle sensation without undue strain. This approach works well for all people, but it is especially suitable—and comfortable—for pregnant women, babies, children, athletes, and older adults.
Dr. Gard holds advanced certification in the Activator Methods Chiropractic Technique and serves as an associate clinical instructor for Activator Methods International. He also works as adjunct faculty for the University of Western States as clinical instructor for the Activator Method.
Learn more and watch this video of Dr. Gard explaining the benefits of the Activator Method:
The concept grew from 35 years of study and 15 years of clinical research, which showed a quick gentle Activator adjustment can move faster than the body’s natural tendency to tighten up and resist the thrust of a traditional adjustment.
The body always reacts to any “intruding” force—even helpful chiropractic adjustments. The Activator Method aids the doctors to pinpoint and adjust problem areas by using “speed” more than “force.”

Relieving Pressure: The Benefits of Spinal Decompression
Introduction:
Back pain, sciatica, and muscle tension can be debilitating, affecting every aspect of daily life. Doctors of chiropractic specialize in helping people overcome neck and back challenges, and one effective solution for alleviating these issues is adding spinal decompression to the treatment plan. In this article, we’ll explore the concept of spinal decompression, its benefits, and how it can help restore spinal health and well-being.
What is Spinal Decompression?
Spinal decompression is a therapy designed to relieve pressure on the spinal cord, nerves, and discs. It involves gentle, controlled stretching of the spine to restore proper muscle tone, increase flexibility, and improve function. This technique can be performed manually or with specialized equipment, such as a decompression table which can easily be programmed to provide the pulsing of higher, then lower, decompressive forces which can aid in the cellular respiration and help the injured tissues heal faster.
Benefits of Spinal Decompression:
1. Relieves Back Pain: Spinal decompression helps alleviate pressure on compressed nerves, reducing back pain and discomfort. 2. Reduces Sciatica: By relieving pressure on the sciatic nerve, decompression techniques can minimize sciatica symptoms like tingling, numbness, and pain. 3. Promotes Healing: Decompression encourages blood flow and nutrient delivery to damaged discs, fostering the healing process. 4. Enhances Flexibility: Regular decompression sessions can improve spinal flexibility and range of motion by resetting joint receptors. 5. Minimizes Muscle Tension: Relaxing the spine and surrounding muscles reduces tension and promotes relaxation. Decompression has been described in research as having the benefits of bed rest, though in far less time and without the negative effects of being sedentary.
Conditions That Benefit from Spinal Decompression:
1. Manual Therapy: Chiropractors use manual traction to stretch and mobilize the spine. 2. Mechanical Decompression: Specialized tables or machines apply gentle, precise pressure to the spine. 3. Traction: Gradual, controlled stretching of the spine using weights or pulleys.
Conclusion:
By restoring proper spinal alignment with gentle and specific adjustments, the goal of chiropractic is to clear interferences from the nervous system and optimize body performance. Adding a synergistic therapy like spinal decompression is a safe, non-invasive, and effective technique for alleviating back pain, sciatica, and other disc-related issues. Spinal decompression promotes healing and relaxation. If you’re struggling with spinal discomfort, consider consulting a chiropractor to explore the benefits of spinal decompression for yourself.
Ready to Learn About the Benefits of Chiropractic Massage Therapy?
At Walker Road Chiropractic, Dr. Gard and his team of Licensed Massage Therapists (LMTs) can promote healing and provide further relief from neuromusculoskeletal system issues and spinal disorders with massage.
As part of this holistic approach, Dr. Gard considers your situation and will often recommend a specific type of massage to facilitate healing. Massage can relieve pain while providing these benefits and addressing these issues:
Improving range of motion
Tissue flexibility
Muscle relaxation
Reduction in spasms and cramps that can inhibit a healthy lifestyle
Chronic pain, like Myofascial pain syndrome
Soft-tissue strains or injuries
Sports injuries
Temporomandibular joint pain (more commonly referred to as TMJD)
Headaches, migraines, and more
Combining chiropractic care and therapeutic massage therapy. As a chiropractor, Dr. Gard focuses on the nervous and skeletal systems and their role in the alignment of the vertebral column and other joints in your body. Similarly, LMTs deal with muscles as well as the skeletal system.
With this overlapping focus, Dr. Gard uses massage as an effective tool for treating stress- and strain-related problems as well as helping prevent other ailments that can arise from untreated problems. Massage reduces the stress in the muscles and nerves and improves circulation, including flow of blood, lymph, and intestinal fluids, which lead to a more pain-free and healthier life.
Meeting People’s Needs with Different Types ofTherapeutic Massage.
Trigger Point
Recommended: people suffering from headaches or pain that affects the legs or arms.
Approach and Benefits: reduces muscle tension by “resetting the points” that leads to muscle relaxation.
Deep Tissue
Recommended: people recovering; injury treatment option as well as specialized massage therapy (Examples: it is highly effective in treatment of post-breast-cancer operation recovery and post-surgery problems in caesarean cases and joint repair.)
Approach: deep and constant pressure is applied slowly and it gradually increases as the muscles relax.
Benefits: eliminates muscle tension; reduces pain spasms; and slowly restores normal motion.
Pregnancy Massage
Recommended: women suffering from cramps, lower back pain, and spasms during pregnancy.
Approach and Benefits: chiropractic massage therapy is an ideal natural treatment for a woman and her baby. It relieves pain without medications and presents no harmful side effects.
Sports massage
Recommended: athletes and especially female athletes, who would like to speed their recovery after competitions and events.
Approach: Focusing on the Myofascial and musculoskeletal areas—as the athlete’s body experiences tension during activities.
Benefits: Myofascial release helps to restore movement. Athletes often benefit from this combination of chiropractic and massage therapy treatment, as they often (unnecessarily!) live with a great deal of uncomfortable tissue pressure.
Dr. Gard can also recommend changes in exercise routines to give the body time to heal and avoid serious pain.
Highly trained to serve you! The LMTs at Walker Road Chiropractic carry their Chiropractic Assistant (CA) license. This additional training enables them to use other tools, such as the Erchonia Percussor, TerraQuant Pulsed Cold Laser, the Acuscope, and the Myopulse. They also receive training on properly using the Kennedy Technique decompression table and the Active Therapeutic Movement (ATM2™) Concept, so they can assist and safely help patients onto machines and administer treatments under Dr. Gard’s supervision.

Viewing the body’s good health as a balanced triad, this integrative system considers the three components of physical, chemical, and mental/emotional to evaluate and address your health. When a person experiences poor health, it is often due to an imbalance in one or more of these three factors.
George Goodheart, DC, introduced this approach in 1964, and his students refined it over the next 50-plus years. By drawing on the strengths of various methods, including acupuncture, chiropractic, and naturopathy, Dr. Gard can gain a deeper understanding of your body and its needs while avoiding the trap of symptom-chasing and instead actually addressing the underlying cause.
Approach to Applied Kinesiology:
Dr. Gard finds a muscle that tests weak and attempts to determine why that muscle is not functioning properly. Next, he will evaluate and apply a specifically selected therapy that will best eliminate the muscle weakness and help you regain control! In some cases, Dr. Gard may test for environmental or food sensitivities by using a previously strong muscle to find what weakens it.
Applied Kinesiology Therapies May Include:
Specific Joint Manipulation and/or Mobilization
Myofascial Release and/or Active Release Techniques® (ART)
Meridian Therapy
Cranial Techniques
Clinical Nutrition
Homeopathy
Herbal Remedies

Maintain Your Progress and Enjoy Your Freedom—and Life!
As part of his practical approach to holistic chiropractic care, Dr. Gard provides on-site rehab services as well as helpful at-home exercises to help you continue the healing process and improve your quality of life.
Experience the Benefits of Pilates Rehab Therapy The Pilates method uses exercises that restore and maintain your natural body structure, including strengthening and rebalancing muscles that support joints. Rehab is especially helpful to maintain healthy changes of a chiropractic adjustment, as the body will often try to return to an incorrect posturing or movement pattern. Rehab helps retrain your body!
Our skilled staff use floor-mat exercises and/or an interactive piece of equipment, The Pilates Clinical Reformer®, to help with safe and effective rehab. Guiding a person through proper exercise movements that strengthen and gently stretch muscles and joints, the staff member will also help you focus on these five important rehab principles:
Breathing: helps expand the rib cage, frees the shoulders to lift, and promotes ideal oxygenation needed for exercise.
Pelvic Placement: helps stabilize and return the lower back and pelvis to a healthy, natural position.
Rib Cage Placement: affects the alignment of the upper (thoracic) spine and can improve breathing and overhead-arm movement.
Scapular (shoulder) movement: helps avoid strain through the neck and upper shoulders.
Head and cervical spine placement: helps return the natural holding position of the neck with the head balancing directly above the shoulders when sitting, lying, and standing
Practice Effective Rehab by Using Pilates Equipment As quickly mentioned above, skilled rehab staff will lead you through specific Pilates exercises using the Pilates Clinical Reformer and/or comfortable mats on the floor.
The Reformer uses a gliding carriage system that provides the appropriate resistance for various exercises and positions. (Read more about the machine at http://www.pilates.com/BBAPP/V/store/reformers/clinical-reformer.html.) Mat exercises may also incorporate additional helpful props, such as the stability ball, mini stability ball, toning balls, FlexBand, Fitness Circle, and more.
