As seasoned chiropractors in Beaverton, we’ve seen almost everything when it comes to workout injuries. And, we know that there would be a lot less back pain that results from everyday workout sessions if more people would simply take their time to go through the proper preparation beforehand.
Common Back Injuries from Exercising
The International Spine Institute points out several different mistakes folks make during their workout. For example, how many times have you gone to the gym and seen that guy who simply walks up to a heavy bar of weights on the floor, and just lifts them carelessly?
Well, you should never just lift something that’s super heavy in that spontaneous manner, no matter if its a heavy weight bar in the gym or a huge sack of potatoes!
More than likely, that guy’s not using the proper form or technique, which we know as experienced chiropractors can severely damage your back muscles over time, and quite possibly your spine as well in the worst instances. This doesn’t only happen when a person uses improper form when lifting heavy weights, but also when doing regular everyday exercises that don’t involve weights.
For instance, have you ever noticed how so many people have a tendency to let their lower back sink or dip when they do push ups? Well, this can cause sudden episodes of back pain, soreness and/or fatigue during the day when you’re not working out. Meanwhile, folks always wonder while they are going through their normal daily routine, “Where the heck is all this back pain coming from all of a sudden…what did I do??”
Reducing the Risk of Back Pain from Exercise
If you properly warm up your muscles via stretching and other techniques before your workout, you will greatly lower your risk of back pain during and after. Also, if you are planning on jumping back into working out after not hitting the gym for a long while, please, go slowly! Your body has to gradually adjust back into your exercise routine.
Also, don’t be ashamed of using a back brace! This is especially true if you are lifting heavy weight bars up off of the gym floor multiple times during your workout, and/or you are going to be lifting more than usual in your evolving muscle-building routine.
